Look Back PPD

Personal progress development covers activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employ-ability, enhance the quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations. Personal development takes place over the course of a person's entire life. Not limited to self-help, the concept involves formal and informal activities for developing others in roles such as teacher, guide, counselor, manager, life coach or mentor.

For future career life, we wand many soft skills. So according to our degree program we participate for many PPD sessions hole 2 years that we were in University.

We did lots of activities and programs within the university as well as out of it. We went and participated many sessions. We got lot of life experience that can't get other subjects.

  • We improve our soft skills
  • leadership skills
  • Team work experience
  • How work withing team and as leaders
  • How face problems and how solve them
  • Art of living
  • How face interviews
  • How make a Curricular Vitiate correctly
  • Table manners and etickets
  • Meet industrial people
  • wont to industry

And lot of things.

When I was in 1st year 1st day of PPD session, I think It will be wonderful subject. But after few lecture series I think It was wrong, this is time wasting activity. But however I participated every sessions. Now I can understand why this kind of subject included in to our degree. And It mostly depend on the guider of this course. I thankful for her to give us a wonderful opportunities. As a teacher she knows every students personally. She know every students names. She gave her attention for every student same way. I think it is a big reason for success this sessions.

I hope to see this PPD program will conduct for next up coming batches also. And most important thing is that I saw is give personal attention for every student and grew their skills well. I suggest conduct it for future sessions.

In conclusion we should say the PPD is a one of most important and essential subject module for undergraduate to life experience, develop life skills and enjoy the university life externally to the academic works. We should thank for Madam Sarasi Senadeera and university authority to create such subject module and those sessions.

"most important in my life is using computing to help people be happy, and to relieve them of the suffering they experience. ... The ability to help people be happy and suffer less is what I call true love, which I think has three essential components: kindness, compassion, and equanimity."

Out Bound Training Program

As the final ppd session we had to participate for a out bound training program at Trincomalee Eastern Command naval and maritime academy trincomalee, Sri Lanka. It was really joyful experience for all of us.

It is a full of 2 days and one night training program.  They supplied us very good accommodation, foods safety and beverage. Their main target was develop our leadership skills and other personality skills and give us a great experience out of our academic life. They wanted to give us enjoy full outdoor activities.

First day we arrived their at 9.30 a.m. After wearing bottom and t shirt , we got our lunch at a place which is situated in the sea side of the camp. After getting yummy meal we went to the one side of camp area and the training program was started.

All students divide in to 4 groups and named them as  "Alfa" , "Bravo" and two more. My group name is "Bravo". We have to participate lot of team building activities and leadership activities.

  • High Voltage Electric Squire ;   There was a metal square frame which hung out in a branch of a tree, using a rope. Each group included ten members for this activity. We had to think that the frame as a high voltage one. The task was to go through the frame without touching any part of the frame.

  • Mabel pass pipeline ;    Some members of the team has few pipes and one marble. We had to pass the marble through the pipes without droping down. That was the enjoyful event.

  • Block train ; we got ten piece of wood. Each person got on one of them. We had to bring those pieces without touching hand.

  • Fill water to patched pipe ;    Each group got a great piece of pipe. It had two open edges. We had to fill that by closing one of the edge, using sea water. We should bring water from the sea, using only hands and mouth.

  • Pass volleyball over the net ;

  • Rope pulling ;

Actually this is is real new experience for us. At university we always work with computers and book. But activities like this help us to understand how hard work as team. How to work with others. How manage team. Experience for work as leader. How work under leaders order. Planing and withing constrains, how achieve the target.

At that day night, they arranged us a beach party. We did dramas, dances, sing songs at that party. It is also new life experience for us.

Next day is the my most favorite day. Because we have to go through the jungle. But we don't know the road. We had to go using compass and map that they provided.
When we going they provide more leadership activities also. It was unforgettable life experience.

After that task we went to Navel base camp museum. We got brief idea about war and terrorists. as we as ancient technologies that dutch people used in ancient time.

Then our training program was over. We has great , amazing and unforgettable experience from there. We should thank for that naval base and offices for giving such program to us..

leadership skills needed to succeed in business and team-building. This skills refers to how clearly a leader sees his or her vision, shares it with employees, and inspires them to support that vision. As software engineering Industry It is very important part.

Table Ethics and etiquette

The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) is the only Government approved premier Institute in Sri Lanka, which was established by the Government in 1964 to train young men and women in the complex field of Hospitality and Travel Industry, and is managed by The Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs. Further, in order to facilitate students island-wide, provincial schools have been set up in Anuradhapura, Bandarawela, Pallekelle, Koggala, Ratnapura, and Kurunegala. It is a visit by university of kelaniya software engineering 2nd year students to SLITHM arrange by madam Sarasi Senadheera. On that project , we learn lot of thing about Table ethics and etiquettes.

At informal meals, place the napkin in your lap immediately upon seating. During formal occasions, before unfolding the napkin, wait for the hostess to remove her napkin from the table and unfold it in her lap.
  1. Place the napkin in your lap upon seating.
  1. When leaving the table temporarily, put the napkin on your chair.
  1. At the meal's end, fold your napkin and place it to the left of your place setting.

HANDLING UTENSILS

The continental style prevails at all meals, formal and informal, because it is a natural, non-disruptive way to eat.

Table manners infograph showing how to hold a fork and knife using the Continental Style

  1. Hold your fork in your left hand, tines downward.
  2. Hold your knife in your right hand, an inch or two above the plate.
  3. Extend your index finger along the top of the blade.
  4. Use your fork to spear and lift food to your mouth.

THE TABLE SETTING

Deciding which knife, fork, or spoon to use is made easier by the outside-in rule – use utensils on the outside first and working your way inward. So, if you are served a salad first, use the fork set to the far left of your plate.
Your water glass is the one above the knife in your place setting and your bread plate is to the left. To remember which bread plate belongs to you and if the glass in front of you belongs to you or your neighbor, use “b” and “d”. Touch the index finger on your right hand to your right thumb. Touch the index finger on your left hand to your left thumb. The “b” formed by your left hand is for “bread” (your bread plate is always at the left of your place setting). The “d” formed by your right hand is for “drink” (your drinking glasses are always at the right of your place setting).

RESTING UTENSILS

When you pause to take a sip of your beverage or to speak with someone, rest your utensils in one of the two following styles:
Continental Style: Place your knife and fork on your plate near the center, slightly angled in an inverted V and with the tips of the knife and fork pointing toward each other.
American Style: Rest your knife on the top right of your plate (diagonally) with the fork nearby (tines up).
When each course is finished:
Place the knife and fork parallel with the handles in the four o'clock position on the right rim of the plate.

SOUP ETIQUETTE
Hold the soupspoon by resting the end of the handle on your middle finger, with your thumb on top. Dip the spoon sideways at the near edge of the bowl, then skim away from you. Sip from the side of the spoon. To retrieve the last spoonful of soup, slightly tip the bowl away from you.

SEATING ETIQUETTE

Your host may have seating arrangements in mind, so you should allow him to direct you to your seat. As the host, you should suggest the seating arrangements.
In a restaurant, the guest of honor should sit in the best seat at the table. Usually that is one with the back of the chair to the wall. Once the guest of honor's seat is determined, the host should sit to her left. Other people are then offered seats around the table.
Unless protocol is being observed, other guests should not be seated according to their importance.
Beyond these few guidelines, guests should be arranged in the way that the host feels will be most congenial for conversation.
In a private residence the hostess should suggest where to leave a purse, purses should not be brought to the table. In a restaurant or public place it is held on the lap or placed close at hand.

How ever it was a very good opportunity to us to learn lots of new things... I want to thanks to  The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management for giving this chance to us.

Dining etiquette might be more important to your career success then you think. Proper table manners are associated with competence and professionalism. Bad table manners leave a sloppy impression and signal a lack of attention to detail.

Latest Software Engineering Trends..

As software Engineering undergraduates , we have to cooperate and use latest software engineering trends. In industry people mostly adapt with this hardly. So Representing hSenidMobile Company cam a Software Engineer and HR manager to share their experience and knowledge with us as invited by madam Sarasi Senadheera.

He discus about which kind of future we are going to involve. He specially mention about 7 areas that software engineering trends nowadays..

Programmers love to sneer at the world of fashion where trends blow through like breezes. Skirt lengths rise and fall, pigments come and go, ties get fatter, then thinner. But in the world of technology, rigor, science, math, and precision rule over fad. That's not to say programming is a profession devoid of trends. The difference is that programming trends are driven by greater efficiency, increased customization, and ease of use. The new technologies that deliver one or more of these eclipse the previous generation. It's a meritocracy, not a whimsy-ocracy.

Trend 1: Mobile

It’s not a secret anymore that Google made a shift to a mobile-driven search index and mobile-friendly websites get higher rankings. Mobile will be big on the minds of all developers especially because mobile Google searches have surpassed desktop searches in several countries including the United States and Japan.
However, having a responsive website will not be enough and companies will continue to transfer their business activities to native mobile apps. More companies will focus on building native mobile apps that represent the basic functionality and the essence of business.

Trend 2: Single-Page Applications (SPAs)

Gone are the days when you need a bulky and cumbersome website. Currently, SPAs allow you to load a single HTML page that’s dynamically updated and refreshed as you interact with it. However, the creation of this fluid, responsive, and streamlined experience relies on a lot of JavaScript.

Trend 3: Cloud Computing

All types of electronic gadgets pipe into a cloud. Cloud storage makes life easier and allows you to access the same information using various electronic devices. Electronics manufacturers everywhere are investing heavily in software created with the cloud in mind. Gartner predicts that by 2018, 30% of service-centric companies will move the majority of their ERP applications to the cloud. From year to year, people tend to trust cloud more and very soon cloud experience will become a significant advantage or even necessity in any business sphere.

Trend 4: The Internet of Things (IoT)

Nowadays, countless electronic devices are connected to the Internet, servers, clouds, and each other—a development called IoT. IoT connects things that don’t usually appear online and enables fridge, car engine or parts at your house transmit data to other devices. With the rise of IoT, software developers need to remain vigilant and figure out how to best program these devices to help users control them.

Trend 5: Sensors Vs. Scanners

No matter which technology you prefer–sensors which automatically collect data or scanners that require user action—somebody needs to program these things.

Trend 6: Wearables

Today wearables go far beyond smart watches and fitness trackers: Snapchat’s camera-equipped Spectacles, gimmicks for fitness geeks like Sensoria’s sensor-packed shoes or UnderArmor Athlete Recovery Sleepwear are illustrative proofs. Tech giants like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi will continue nurturing the market with their brand-new products. Software developers will need to create applications and services for these nifty wearables. In particular, many of these wearables rely on complex algorithms to process data.

Trend 7: Security

With increased connectivity comes heightened concerns about security. Now more than ever, security software needed to protect new technologies is paramount. After all, what good is all this technology if it isn’t protected?

If software development is part of your business model, the benefit of designing with trends in mind will imbue your products and services with quality and longevity. After all, you can ignore fads, but trends are heralding the future.

Using this we have got a super idea about software industry.

If we update with latest technology, That helps us to be Superior in industry

Art Of Living !!!

My Living Style...

DR. AjithE Collonne's lecture on art of living  is the most interesting lecture that i ever heard. He was such capable in conducting lectures in  very interesting way.

Who is Dr.Kolonne?
  • Student of Ananda College Colombo.
  • Production of University of Colombo
  • Completed Masters degree in University of Sri Jayawardanapura
  • PHD completed in International University of America
  • Started career in 1979 as an Instructor in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Peradeniya.
  • Worked at IBM corporation
  • Consultant of NSB and National Enterprise Bank.
  • Worked at Kothalawala Defense University.
  • Appointed as deputy director of the Directorate of Internal Intelligence.
  • Involve with Ministry of Defense
He is very experienced person in our country. Gave us lot of private life examples to go on.

AS he said we live in this word because of three reasons.

1)Happiness
2)Entertainment
3)Enjoyment

  1. Make each moment count and live it to the fullest. When you get up in the morning decide to welcome all the challenges and delights each day brings. Be aware that everything you experience contributes to your knowledge, enjoyment and understanding of life. Every activity can have meaning and purpose and by acknowledging and recognizing it, you enrich your participation in it.

  2. Express yourself and create the life you want. You are unique. Express your individuality and share your observations and insights with others. Make your surroundings a comfortable reflection of that individuality and uniqueness. For instance, if you're a collector, a sports fan, or have a particular hobby, decorate your home with artifacts and mementos that express that part of your personality. It makes for good conversation and reveals something about you to others.

  3. Establish an open, accepting and appreciative mindset. Prepare yourself for whatever comes your way. When you do, the possibility of attracting adverse circumstances lessens because of your willingness to confront and face what is. When you maintain an open, accepting attitude life actually goes more smoothly and without incident. It's as if you're daring life to throw you a curve, but because you aren't afraid, it becomes unnecessary and therefore loses its impact.

  4. Be who you are and go after what you want. Be comfortable with yourself and don't be afraid to go after what you want. So many opportunities are missed out of fear of failure (and success too) and an unwillingness to take risks or put yourself on the line. Life is too short to not give your best shot at something. Strive to reach your potential. The worst that can happen is you learn a valuable lesson.

  5. Have a solid personal foundation balanced with relationships with family, friends and the community. We are social beings who need each other for comfort, support and interaction. It's important to cultivate and value all of our relationships and engage in activities that promote good will and make the community, the country and ultimately the world a better place.

Beauty of UOK

The University of Kelaniya has a proud history of over 130 years. The Vidyalankara Pirivena which was established on 1st November 1875 AD has developed into the University of Kelaniya. Vidyalankara Pirivana gained the status of a University based on the Western Model in 1959. Yet our academic heritage dates back to the beginning of Vidyalankara Pirivena.
With the establishment of modern universities in Sri Lanka in the 1940s and 1950s, the Vidyalankara Pirivena became the Vidyalankara University in 1959, later the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon in 1972, and, ultimately, the University of Kelaniya in 1978.

I want to say about our university in another way. It is about beauty of UOK. There are many calm places in UOK. Now pay attention some places.

  • Thal weta

This place usually called as "thal weta". It gives more proudful view to university. There are many stories  arround thal wata.

  • Mee Amba Sewana

It is called as "Mee Amba Sewana". It also a cool calm place to chatting , Studying , and for many works.

  • Sarungalaya

This is a studying room situated near the Computing and Technology faculty. It is good place for study as well as group works. Many love couples use this place for their freedom.

  • IT tree

All are call this "IT gasa". It is in front of the  IT center. One of my most favorite place in University for stay is  this. I don't know the reason, but I love to stay here.

Personal Progress Development

Travel to Antarctica

Experience an adventure tour of Antarctica and explore the unique conditions at the end of the Earth. Embark from Ushuaia, travelling through the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands to see the incredible landscapes created by the Antarctic climate. See multiple species of playful penguins, the imposing and graceful frames of Antarctic whales and a frenzy of feeding birdlife. Benefit from the navigational expertise and local knowledge of a professional crew and make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience to Antarctica to see the exotic, alien nature of this frozen world for myself.

Why I love this trip

  • Whether we will on land or at sea, we'll see an abundance of wildlife on this trip. Scan the seas for whales and seals, spot rare birds while passing through the Beagle Channel and witness diverse species of penguins on daily boat trips.
  • The spectacular terrain of Antarctica is like nowhere else on Earth. Set foot on the plains, mountains and beaches of the White Continent and watch icebergs calve into the sea.
  • Experience a polar plunge in Antarctic waters - one of the most invigorating dips anyone  ever likely to take.
  • Optional activities such as sea kayaking or polar ice camping on selected voyages can take our adventure to the next level.

Best things to do in Antactica

  • Kayaking :We floated quietly past leopard seals sunning themselves on ice flows, we circumnavigated icebergs floating in the middle of the sea, and we paddled with penguins jumping through the air at the front of our boats.
  • Polar Plunge:  It's the extreme spectrum of adventure travel and not many people will be able to top you once you've told them you survived the polar plunge.

  • CampingYes, it's cold, it's uncomfortable, and you can't eat, drink, or pea on Antarctica, but once you are back on board your ship after surviving a night as the early explorers did, you'll be filled with pride and gratitude that you never have to do that again.

  • Visiting penguins:Speaking of penguins. A highlight of any Antarctica visit is to interact with penguins.

My Dream Trip...... If i'm given plenty of money and period of one month definitely my trip will  to Antactica..................
